The Trinity Labyrinth Project

History of the Trinity Labyrinth Project

In 1997 several members at Trinity were introduced to walking the labyrinth, it was a wish to have one here, there was a slight problem, at that time, there was not a labyrinth small enough to fit into the open space of our  Parish Hall.

In 1998 another member saw the labyrinth at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, California and was not able to walk it at that time.  Ever since that day she had been thinking about this tool and how it could possibly help to solve or answer a few questions that she had on a spiritual level. Waiting to return to San Francisco to experience the labyrinth was not an option for the near future, thus the search began to find one that was the right size and bring it to Trinity.  Research began, through the use of the Internet and the Wide World Web labyrinths in the Northern Virginia Area were located, but all were still too large to fit into the Parish Hall.  After many phone calls were made, and more searching was done, David Tolzman of the Labyrinth Company was found.  He is a labyrinth maker that custom designs labyrinths and was able to make one small enough to fit into Trinity’s Parish Hall.

The labyrinth that was designed specifically for our Parish Hall arrived for the 1st time as a rental in October of 1999.  Over the course of the whole weekend 45 walkers turned out to experience the labyrinth.  It was felt that this would be a good ministry to develop and there was much interest for the labyrinth to return to Trinity.  Having the labyrinth here on site would be the best way to develop this ministry.  Approval from the Vestry to purchase the labyrinth came in November of 1999.  On December 7th, 1999 the labyrinth returned to Trinity, this time to stay permanently. On December 10th the weekend of Labyrinth Open Walks began with a dedication and blessing service of the Labyrinth.  On New Year’s Eve 1999 Trinity joined others in the Nationwide Labyrinth Community by hosting a walk at midnight to bring in the new Millennium, year 2000.  The start of the year 2000 brings in the development of a new ministry and experiences with the labyrinth at our church.
